Ghana’s two most prestigious universities have suspended their final examinations indefinitely due to the industrial action of the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) that they will not return to the lecture halls until the government addresses their concerns.
Both the University of Ghana-Legon (UG) and the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) universities simultaneously released statements today August 6, 2021, to announce the indefinite suspension of final examinations.
The Deputy Registrar in charge of Academic Affairs at the KNUST, Mrs. Margaret Dzisi in a statement said “it is announced for the information of all students and staff that due to the ongoing strike by UTAG, the end-of-semester examinations originally scheduled for Monday, 9h August 2021 to Friday 20th August 2021 have been temporarily suspended until further notice.”
On the part of the Legon, it is also suspending the resumption of the 200 and 300 level students, citing the industrial action of UTAG.
Meanwhile, UTAG has vowed not to return to class until the government addresses the Union’s concerns for better conditions of service.
UTAG is demanding the implementation of a 2012 Single Spine package which puts entry-level lecturers on a salary of $2,084, while the senior staffers want the computation and release of their tier 2 Pension in arrears with interest.
UTAG revealed that the current conditions of service of its members are worse compared to what they enjoyed some nine years ago.
The association has been on a nationwide strike since Monday, August 2, 2021.
