New IGP Assures #FixTheCountry Of Maximum Protection During Demo

The New Acting Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr George Akuffo Dampare, has pledged to provide maximum security for the #FixTheCountry youth group which is scheduled to mount a street protest in Accra today, August 4, 2021.

The Acting IGP, who took office on August 1, said the protesters will be entirely shepherded by the Police.

This was revealed in statements issued by the Economic Fighters League and #FixTheCountry after their meeting with the police hierarchy yesterday, August 3, 2021.

“We were also assured by the Police that water cannons will not be let loose on protesters and would only be deployed as a precaution, measure. Again, we enquired as to if there was any information about a counter-protest? They said no. They also assured us their preparedness to protect the protesters against any infiltrates,” the statement from the Economic Fighters League read.

Meanwhile, the conveners pledged to ensure that all protestors adhere to all the Covid-19 safety protocols.

The new IGP’s assurance comes as a relief to the group, after the police administration had pulled all tactics to prevent the group from demonstrating against what they describe as the rot in the politico-economic system of Ghana.

They had planned their first demonstration on May 9, 2021, but the Police had rushed to the courts to seek a perpetual injunction on the said protests.

After a long-drawn legal tussle, the Police Service was trounced in court and was forced to make a U-Turn.
