Deadly Delta Variant of COVID-19 Rips Through Achimota School

The deadly COVID-19 variant called the “Delta Kappa” has infected some 134 students and a staff member of Achimota School in what has sent shivers through the school.

According to the Director-General of the Ghana Health Service (GHS), Dr Patrick Kuma Aboagye, the first three cases were detected in some students between June 14 and 16 this year.

The desperate situation forced mass testing in the school of some 843 persons, including students and staff.

 “All 135 cases at the time of diagnosis were either asymptomatic or had very mild to moderate illness. One member of staff is among those affected,” the GHS boss said.

Of the 134, some 89 students have recovered while 46 are still active.

Meanwhile, the Ghana Health Service and the Ghana Education Service say measures are being put in place to improve health education in the institution.

Meanwhile, the GHS revealed on Sunday, July 1, 2021, that the total of 1,212 Covid-19 samples sequenced countrywide since July 1 have also shown the dominance of the Alpha variant which was the first strain that hit Ghana, and is relatively less transmissible than the Delta variant that originated in India and has killed many people across the world.

Ghana’s COVID-19 headcount stands at 1,602 active cases, 796 deaths and over 93, 600 of the 96,000 infections have recovered.
