Eugene Arhin’s Ex-Wife In Trouble, As Chantelle Kudjawu Revs Up US$3.5million Defamation Suit

Gloria Assan, the newly divorced former wife of the Director of Communications at Jubilee House, Eugene Arhin is faced with a suit from Chantelle Kudjawu, the lady she alleged was sleeping with her estranged husband in a divorce suit, to face.

Ms. Kudjawu, famous for being the slay queen who ordered National Security Minister, Albert Kan Dapaah about, during what appears to be a telephone sex session, is asking for US$3.5million for the allegation that she was sleeping around with Eugene Arhin, saying she has been defamed.

And because Gloria Assan Arhin had to recant all the infidelity allegations against her husband at the Matrimonial High Court in the substantive divorce petition, Chantelle Kudjawu’s case has been bolstered.

Following the conclusion of the divorce hearing, lawyers for Ms. Kudjawu filed her final supplementary submission at Division 2 of the Accra High Court where the US$ 3.5million dollar defamation case is being heard.

The supplementary submission rubbishes an argument by counsels for Gloria Assan that the conduct of their client falls under the principle of absolute privilege as the allegations were contained in a lawsuit.

“My Lord, as has already been mentioned, there are exceptions to the principle of absolute privilege in judicial pleadings. One of such exceptions is as laid down by the author Spence Bower on page 92 of his book on “A CODE OF THE LAW OF ACTIONABLE DEFAMATION (1908)”. He states that absolute privilege does not apply to or include any publication of defamatory matter to any person other than those to whom, or in any place other than that in which such publication is required or authorized by law to be made for the proper conduct of the judicial proceedings,” it read.

Ms. Kudjawu’s lawyers also argued that the medium used by Gloria Assan to publish the divorce suit exposed her client to public ridicule.

Meanwhile, the main divorce petition hearing concluded with Ms. Gloria Assan being awarded custody of the three children between her and Eugene Arhin along with an uncompleted house at Kpone Katamanso, three cars and a divorce settlement sum of Ghc100,000.
