Former President Mahama has withdrawn his acceptance of his appointment as the African Union’s High Representative to Somalia.
The withdrawal was in a letter to the Chairperson of the AU, Moussa Faki Mahamat.
He explained that “the high political importance of the proposed assignment requires that the High Representative enjoy the unalloyed support and co-operation of all political stakeholders.”
Also, he noted that the lack of support by the Federal Government could jeopardize the whole process and undermine the hopes that the entire world has in bringing peace to Somalia.
John Mahama’s appointment as the AU envoy had been welcomed by the Council of Presidential Candidates of Somalia, and the Coalition of Somalia’s Federal Member States.
He thanked the AU Chair for the confidence reposed in him.
Some people are interpreting President Mahama’s move as the clearest indication yet that he intends to lead the NDC into the next elections.
An AU job at this time could encumber him.
