#FixTheCountry protestors Put Sleepy MPs and MMDCES TO SHAME

Ghanaian youth behind the wildfire #FixThe Country Movement have countered attempts by the government and the Ghana Police Service (GPS) to gag the group from staging a street protest by naming and shaming Members of Parliament and Municipal and District Chief Executives whose localities are in a deplorable state.

The hashtag, #NameAndShame is being used by the movement to out these non-performing public and political officials. The hashtag was deployed on Friday Morning, May 7, 2021. And as of Friday evening, it had generated over 100,000 tweets.

The highly organised group of youth sparking a revolution of accountability in Ghana have once more resorted to social media with a targeted campaign where users are sharing evidential videos and pictures of stalled projects and deteriorating conditions in Ghana’s local government areas.

The pictures are matched with either the MP or MMDCE of the area who are responsible for those projects.

The campaigners say they are embarking on this online protest to highlight the deceit of political officeholders in fulfilling government projects and policies.

The groups of young disgruntled Ghanaians have started a spontaneous movement over the weekend to challenge the continuous deception by the political class in Ghana and their refusal to change the economic fortunes of the country.

Their rampaging campaign has eclipsed the Ghanaian social media as well as traditional media platforms in what has sent the Akufo Addo administration into a state of hysteria.

The #FixTheCountry movement had scheduled a street protest on May 9, 2021, but the police service had clandestinely gone to the High Court to seek a curious restraining order preventing the group from the planned picketing.

The police claim, the restraining order was in line with COVID-19 protocols restricting mass gathering. But the group has vowed it will not be perturbed and would use social media as its main tool to drive home its point.

Social media appear to have served the group unprecedented popularity, given the popularity, it has gathered having mushroomed in less than a week.
