Controversial Spokesperson for the National Chief Imam, Sheikh Armiyawu Shaibu, has been fingered as the person behind a controversial thanksgiving service that Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia is organizing at the Abossey Okai Central Mosque over a supposed election victory in the 2020 polls.
Widely reported news story carrying the anger of leading clerics of the Muslim community hold that Armiyawu Shaibu, a man accused of being an amigo of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), reportedly advised Bawumia to hold the thanksgiving as a way of symbolically getting Muslims and the Zongo communities to accept that the NPP has been re-elected.
This is in spite of the fact that the 2020 Presidential election is currently under dispute.
Armiyawu Shaibu is the same man who had controversially claimed that election results that the Coalition for Domestic Election Observers (CODEO) had done for the Presidential election tallied with that of the Electoral Commission, even though that of the EC turned out to be mathematically impossible.
His controversial claim provoked a statement from the Office of the Chief Imam, distancing the revered cleric from Armiyawu’s strange mathematics of collated figures.
Some Muslim Youth groups have since been demanding that he be removed from the spokesman role he plays for the Chief Imam so that he does not unnecessarily politicise the office of the Centenarian Chief Imam.
Reports in the media have also indicated that leading clerics of the Islamic faith are petitioning the Chief Imam’s Office to fire the alleged NPP man who is accused of staining the revered persona of the Chief Imam and his office with dirty partisan politics.
