Rawlings Son Booms

Son of late former President Jerry John Rawlings has thrown shade at President Akufo-Addo, implying the kleptocracy of his administration amidst the shocking resignation of Special Prosecutor, Martin A.B.K Amidu.

In a tweet on his Twitter handle shortly after news went viral that Special Prosecutor, Martin Amidu had resigned over hounding he has been receiving for the corruption risk assessment he made into the stinking Agyapa Royalties deal, Kimathi Rawlings gave a watchman and thief scenario.

“When the security man realizes the Landlord is the real thief, he flees.”

The younger Rawlings, who has kept away from politics all his life made sure to include a photo of his late father in a handshake with Amidu at what would appear to be a June 4th event held in 2005, when Kufuor was President and at a time Akufo-Addo and the Rawlingses were bitter enemies.

Now, it is not clear what effect this tweet, reeking with insinuations was intended, however, it fits into allegations made by Martin Amidu as a parting shot that President Akufo Addo had directly tried to arm-twist him to water down the damning fraud and corruption he uncovered in the Agyapa deal.

It is also unclear what camp within the Rawlingses home Kimathi belongs to because it is apparent that despite the bitter past between the two, late Jerry Rawlings’ wife Nana Konadu Agyemang-Rawlings had cozied up to the Akufo Addo administration.

There were also reports that Kimathi was romantically involved with one of the daughters of President Akufo Addo and that the relationship may have collapsed. No official statement had been made to either confirm or deny this report that had gone viral since 2015 thereabout.

The complex relationship between the Rawlingses and the Akufo Addo’s had had a particularly turbulent phase, when as Attorney General during the John Kufour administration, Akufo-Addo had been one of the major spearheads of the National Reconciliation Commission, which would be seen as an attempt to “nail” Jerry Rawlings whose Military rule was punctuated by extra-judicial killings of prominent personalities.

Nana would eventually withdraw Rawlings’ diplomatic courtesies because of Rawlings’ incessant criticism of the Kufuor government, causing him to carry his bags personally and queue at the Kotoka International Airport (KIA) like an ordinary citizen instead of a former President.

During this vendetta period, Akufo-Addo would also drag Nana Konadu Agyemang Rawlings to court and prosecuted her for alleged corruption

Already the seeming truce between the Akufo Addo administration and the Rawlingses is beginning to flay at the edges as the government is caught in a tussled with the National Democratic Congress (NDC) founded by the late Rawlings, over the funeral rights of the deceased former president.

This tussle revealed the apparent camps in the Rawlingses family when Kimathi and Dr. Zenator Rawlings (Jerry Rawlings, eldest daughter) showed up at a vigil held by the NDC for their departed founder, while Nana Konadu Agyemang-Rawlings and her other children were visibly absent.

It is in the build-up to the funeral that Mr. Rawlings’ son, Kimathi Rawlings, may have joined his late father’s favourite habit of bluntly calling out corrupt leadership in Ghana.
