The 2020 Presidential Candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has charged the Jean Mensah-led Electoral Commission of corrupting the Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) into a toothless rubber stamp.
In an interview with Accra based Joy News, Mr. Mahama said IPAC which used to be pivotal to Ghana’s electoral architecture has been bastardized by the current leadership of the EC which has allowed tiny parties to rubbish the body.
“They have bastardised IPAC; IPAC has become like an enemy to the Commission. They don’t want to call for [IPAC] meetings and they have revived all those moribund and non-existent parties,” he said.
He revealed that often, the EC leadership would brief smaller parties on the IPAC ahead of the main discussions with the rest of the Committee members, and in so doing pre-determine that the EC will carry anything it has decided on before voting takes place.
These small parties, would then just tow the EC position and vote in favour of anything that Jean Mensah and her deputies.
“They brief them [some members] beforehand and shut everybody up when we go for meetings so they should take responsibilities for whatever happens,” Mr. Mahama said.
According to him, the development is dangerous and does not augur well at all for Ghana’s democracy.
This is not the first time Jean Adukwei Mensah has been accused of dictatorial tendencies at IPAC meetings. Often she reportedly sidelines the Committee and takes decision without recourse to parties.
Madam Mensah has actually said that IPAC is just a formality and that the Commission does not owe political parties explanations.
