Covid-19 Killing More In Ashanti Than Any Other Region

The Ashanti Region is having the highest Covid-19 mortality rate in the country with almost 49% of all deaths in the country occurring there.

58 out of the 129 that have been officially confirmed occurred in the Ashanti Region.

Health authorities are perplexed over the development with the Ghana Health Service (GHS) saying it will make a special enquiry.

Ahead of the enquiry, however, the hypothesis is that many more are dying in the region because COVID-19 patients are reporting too late to hospitals.

“The mortalities may be due to the fact that people are reporting late or people are living in denial or we are dealing with a difficult situation or we are not managing the cases as expected,” Ashanti Regional Health Director, Emmanuel Tenkorang is reported as saying.

He adds, “We analyse records every day because you realise that most of them come and die within 24 hours. Some of them even are brought in dead and you do the autopsy and that’s when you realise that it’s COVID.”

Out of Ghana’s national case count of a little over 23,000, the Ashanti Region accounts for 4,972 of the infections as the second highest infection zone in Ghana after the Greater Accra Region.

There are 42 districts in Ashanti out of which the Kumasi metropolis has recorded the highest number of deaths at 33.

Obuasi Municipality and the Obuasi East District have 4 deaths each; Afigya Kwabre South and Kwaadaso also have three each while Old Tafo has two.

Nine other districts have recorded one death each.
