A Political Science lecturer at the University of Cape Coast (UCC), Jonathan Asante Okyere, has suggested that the Electoral Commission (EC) Boss, Jean Mensah and other commissioners at the election regulatory body should be jailed if their push for the controversial new voters register drives the country into mayhem.
Mr. Okyere has questioned the motive of EC in its determination to compile a new voters’ register for the December 7 general elections despite the intense opposition to the move by several political parties, civil society groups and a cross-section of the public.
“I think all these people must go to jail because they are going to cause mayhem,” he told Onua FM in an interview monitored by Whatsup News on Friday, May 15, 2020.
.According to him, if the EC insists against all opposition, he will have no other option than to believe that the electoral body was being tele-prompted by some interest groups.
The EC had announced that it wants to overhaul the current voters’ register despite the relatively tight schedule of compiling a register with six months to an election, and amidst the prevailing threat of the exercise potentially sparking a wave of more infections of the deadly Covid-19 disease.
Also, critics have questioned the EC’s plan, particularly given the fact that it had used the current register to organise three major elections in the past year in Ghana.
Currently, Ghana is observing a strict social distancing regime following the outbreak of Covid-19 n the country. This had affected an earlier date of April 8 scheduled by the EC as the start of registration for the new register. Currently, the EC has no official date to start a new registration, yet it said it is unmoved in its resolve to compile a new register.
