Ghana’s Borders Closed One More Month

The President, Nana Akufo-Addo has announced an extension of Ghana’s border closure to travellers as the rate of Covid-19 infections in the country skyrockets.

The President made this announcement during a virtual May Day celebration today, May 1, 2020.  The border closure will last into June 2020 as several travellers to and from Ghana have become stranded in transit.

The country’s borders were slammed shut mid-March after officials confirmed Ghana’s first wave of Covid-19 infections. Initially, the government had barred travellers from countries with more than 200 officially confirmed Covid-19 infections, but the rapid spread of the virus quickly forced the Akufo Addo administration to slap a blanket travel ban from all countries, regardless of their infection rates.

There is also an Executive Instrument activated to ban mass gathering beyond 25 people nationwide. This means Churches, Events, Restaurants and several other public engagements have been put on hold.

Ghana has been caught in the eye of the global Covid-19 infection with over 2,070 cases now and 17 deaths.
