ECG Explains How To Benefit From Free Electricity Under Covid-19 Relief

The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) says it is on track to roll out Government’s Covid-19 intervention to provide free electricity for Ghanaians starting from 1st May.

In a statement, the State power distributor explains that the way for people to avail themselves of the intervention is just to swipe their prepaid cards across their meters or insert them where insertion is the loading way, before going to vending points.

This way, the configuration to obtain the free power credit will be done digitally.

Per the intervention, lifeline customers (persons who consume between 0 and 50KW-h a month) will enjoy free electricity for April, May and June as Government will fully absorb their bills for three months.

For non-lifeline prepaid and post-paid customers (Residential and Commercial), they will enjoy a 50 Per cent reliefs on their electricity consumption in April, May and June using their March 2020 consumption as the benchmark, according to an announcement by the President.

“We’ve decided on further measures of mitigation for all Ghanaians for the next three months, i.e April, May and June. The government will fully absorb electricity bills for the poorest of the poor, i.e, for all consumers. That is free electricity for persons who consume from 0-50 kilowatt-hours a month for this period,” President Akufo-Addo had told the nation.

The ECG has since said that the relief will be implemented from May 1st 2020.
