Just as the two-week partial lockdown declared by President Akufo-Addo in some selected cities count down to a close, the Lower Manya Krobo Municipality in the Eastern Region has declared it is also going into its own lockdown.
The Municipal Assembly says their lockdown is starting from tomorrow, Friday the 10th of April.
It is not clear how long this lockdown will last. The Eastern Region, the Region where Lower Manya Krobo is situated in, was not included by the two-week partial lockdown that was initiated by President Akufo-Addo in late March.
Municipal Chief Executive for the area, Ebenezer Tetteh, explains that they decided on the lockdown after they realized that a lot of people moved into the area to escape the lockdown restriction in Accra and Tema areas.
Consequently, he said, security personnel have been deployed to stand at various check-points to screen and interrogate people who enter and exit the Municipality.
He added some businesses have also been directed to close down in the area to enhance the effectiveness of the exercise.
Hotels, he said, are required to provide details of persons who checked.
It is not clear if the MCE has the power to declare a lockdown just as President Akufo-Addo had done exercising powers under the Imposition of Restriction Act.
The Eastern Region has so far recorded one coronavirus infection, making it one of seven regions in Ghana to be affected by the spread of the virus.
