Chief Justice Designates 28 Courts To Deal With Lockdown Breach Cases

Chief Justice Kwesi Aning Yeboah, has designated a total of 28 courts within the Greater Accra and Greater Kumasi area, to deal with possible breaches of the partial lockdown instituted by Government.

Even as the streets in the capital region and parts of the Ashanti Region crawl with security personnel to enforce the order, the Chief Justice has also set up courts to prosecute potential breachers.

In a press release Monday, Justice Anin Yeboah asked the courts to mainly on “breaches arising from the restriction orders and other criminal matters.”

 He also ordered registrars to adjourn all cases listed during the period of the partial lockdown to dates in May and June 2020.

“The Supreme Court and Court of Appeal will be available to handle urgent cases as may be determined by the Chief Justice during this period,” the release said.

According the Minority’s Ranking Member on the Legal Committee of Parliament, Innusah Fuseini, anyone found in breach of the lockdown can spend up to 14 years in jail as penalty.

The Chief Justice’ press release also highlighted that core support staff at the Judiciary, including Registrars, cashiers, court clerks, interpreters, recorders and bailiffs are to remain at work.

All other staff according to the Chief Justice are to apply for their leave during the period.
