“Kwahu O Kwahu” Cancelled over Coronavirus Fears

The Kwahu Traditional Council has cancelled Africa’s biggest Easter in the Kwahu area of the Eastern Region.

The scrapping is in sync with the state of emergency declared by the government by banning public gatherings over the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic.

“The Annual Kwahu Easter and all activities associated with it have been called off. All public engagements by Nananom within the Kwahu Traditional Council are cancelled…As already advised, handshaking, hugging and other forms of bodily contacts must be discouraged,” read a statement issued today March 16, 2020.

The statement comes in the wake of the Akufo Addo administration slapping restrictions on large public gathering to minimise the potential spread of the deadly flu-like virus which has so far killed about 6,000 out of some 160,000 infected worldwide.

The Kwahu Easter Festival with is a week-long celebration during Easter is perhaps the biggest festival in Ghana that spans over 17 towns and villages on the picturesque Kwahu Mountain range.

Thousands of revellers from all over Ghana and from outside Ghana throng to Kwahu every year to celebrate the festival which is mostly characterised by an endless street carnival across the Kwahu Mountains.
