WAFA on rampage against Ashgold

West Africa Football Academy (WAFA) turned the Red Bull Arena at Sogakope into a slaughter house by demolishing league leaders Ashgold 6-1 to breath life into the Ghana Premier League.

After failing to win four of their home matches, WAFA dominated the match and should have opened the scoring in the 16th minute but Richard Danso who was presented with the opportunity failed to connect a brilliant pass from Augustine Boakye.

WAFA opener

WAFA continued to probe for the opener and earned a corner in the 27th minute which was connected beautifully by defender Konadu Yiadom who outjumped his markers to nod home the ball.

Undaunted by the early goal, the visitors accepted the challenge, got their act together and almost came at par in the 30th minute, but the woodwork denied them.

Ashgold came close to snatching the equaliser just after the half hour mark but were denied by the woodwork.

They, however, came at par in the 33rd minute when Amos Nkrumah, from close range, headed in a cross.

Left off the hook, WAFA surged forward as they probed for more goals but it was not until recess that they earned a penalty when Sampson Agyapong was brought down in the box and skipper Ibrahim Abukari who elected himself to take the kick caught the goalkeeper flatfooted and hit the back of the net.

Urged on by the fans, WAFA continued to run over the league leaders and scored four more goals through Yiadom, Daniel Owusu, Eric Asamany and Haruna Molla Jalilu.

Kotoko thump Bechem

Kumasi Asante Kotoko came from behind to defeat visiting Bechem United 3-1 during the 12th week Premier League match last Friday at the Accra Sports Stadium, which has now been adopted as home grounds for the Kumasi-based club.

The match, which brought the fans onto their feet on many occasions, saw Bechem United take the lead in the 20th minute through striker Hafiz Konkoni against the run of play.

Kotoko responded swiftly and piled pressure on their opponents and pulled level in the 37th minute through Martin Antwi who capitalised on a goalkeeping error by Prince Asempa to slot the ball home.

Augustine Okrah increased the tally for Kotoko during time added on in the first half when he tapped the ball home after Asempa failed to make a first time save.

In the 56th minute, Imoro Ibrahim added his name to the score sheet through a beautiful free kick outside the box to bring the fans on their feet.
