The Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA) has complained about how local food prices are way beyond the means of many Ghanaians, in what flatly exposes President Akufo Addo’s claims that agricultural production has improve under his tenure.
According to IEA, many crops are still subject to seasonal factors which directly imparts their prices.
President Akufo Addo’s claim that Ghana is now a net exporter of foodstuffs and that food prices are at their lowest currently falls flat in the face of the independent assessment by IEA.
According to Dr. John K.
Kwakye, Director of Research, IEA, last Tuesday, “the fact that food
accounts for 43? of the average Ghanaian’s monthly spending is enough evidence
that food prices are still prohibitively high.”
Dr. Kwakye does not believe there is any recuse for Ghanaians anytime soon as
projections show that food prices will remain high for some time.
Meanwhile, the former Director of Ghana Health Services (GHS) Prof. Badu Akosa is claiming that better access to local Ghanaian foods can reduce modern diseases ravaging Ghanaians such as cancer, diabetes, Obesity, etc.
