The Jubilee House has finally confirmed exclusive reports carried by Whatsup News about a week ago that President Akufo Addo will be appointing his nephew-in-law Maj. Gen. Thomas Oppong Peprah to the top military position as the Chief of Army Staff.
In an official correspondence signed by the President’s Director of Communications, Eugene Arhin, the Jubilee House claims the appointment was due to the retirement of Major General William Ayamdo who was occupying that position.
“Following the completion of the tour of duty and subsequent retirement from the Ghana Armed Forces of Major General William Ayamdo, the Chief of Army Staff, the President of the Republic, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo, has, in consultation with the Council of State appointed Major General Thomas Oppong-Peprah, currently Chief of Staff at the General Headquarters of the Ghana Armed Forces, as the new Chief of Army Staff, effective Tuesday, 18th February 2020,” Eugene Arhin wrote today-February 12, 2020.
Whatsup gathered that this controversial appointment was supposed to have been confirmed almost two weeks ago, but for an unknown reason, had been delayed.
Insiders, tell Whatsup News that the delay is not unrelated to the fact that the breaking of the news by Whatsup News disoriented the seat of government.
The promotion of his in-law through the army ranks has been tipped as the fastest string of promotion ever enjoyed by a single officer in the army, as speculations heighten about the President aligning the army top positions with perceived loyalists in anticipation of possible election-related disturbances.
Maj.Gen. Oppong-Preprah who is the husband of Asantewaa, the daughter of Nana Ama Dokuah, the Queen Mother of Kyebi; with whom President Akufo-Addo is directly related to in the Kyebi royal family had barely occupied the Army Chief of Staff position for a year after he replaced Rear Admiral Moses Beick-Baffoe in 2019.
As of late 2018, the then Brigadier Gen. Oppong Peprah was the Officer Commanding Southern Command, he was promptly promoted to the rank of Major General, much to the chagrin of his contemporaries, many of who claim he was jumped over his seniors.
Shortly after that promotion, in 2019, he was again promoted to the position Army Chief of Staff, the latest promotion will be the third in a row within one year. Maj. Gen Oppong-Peprah who is reportedly married to two women is alleged to have officially listed his children as five, but unconfirmed reports have it that he has about eight children with up to six women.
Already at the position of Army Chief of Staff a hushed-up scandal has reportedly rocked him.
The scandal involves a suspicious movement of huge monies from the army’s military mission in Lebanon to Ghana. The amount totalling some US$ 2.5 million is reported by reliable sources to have been partly transferred to the accounts of Maj. Gen Oppong Pepprah,
Another part of the money was reportedly smuggled from Lebanon to Ghana in cash.
The reliable sources in the army who revealed this possible money laundering incident to Whatsup News has pleaded anonymity due to the gravity of the revelations being made.
According to the sources, an amount of US$ 1.3 million was transferred in June 2019 through the express supervision of one Lt. Commander Daniel Brempong who is said to be responsible for the finances of the Ghanaian military mission in Lebanon.
The remaining amount of some US$ 1.2 million was reportedly brought to the Army Chief of Staff as cash in Duffel bags.
The cash delivery was reportedly supervised by one Lt. Col. Fiifi Deegbe, who is the commander of the United Nations Ghanaian Military detachment to Lebanon called the Unifil GHANBATT 85 which returned in July 2019, for the mandatory rotation of personnel on the UN missions.
