Ahead of the presentation of the last budget of the Akufo-Addo government’s tenure, the Finance Ministry has done what can be described as a rent-hire of approval for the budget in advance.
The Ministry, headed by the President’s cousin, Ken Ofori-Atta, gathered all the leaders of the various student fronts in the country for a hobnobbing that was concluded with a payout.
Ministry of Finance doled out ghs1000 to each student leader as a so called token of appreciation for making the time.
The meeting had been held at the International Conference Center in Accra on Saturday, with senior officials of the Finance Ministry stepping up to give a so-called pre-budget privy to the student leaders.
According to sources, in attendance were leaders of the Ghana National Union of Students (NUGS), Private Universities Students Association of Ghana (PUSAG) and the Graduate Students Association of Ghana (GRASAG).
The so called pre-budget review was to explain to the student leaders, why government had decided to take certain decisions that will be officially announced to the rest of the nation Today.
Even though it was not openly communicated, the monies that were doled out to the student leaders has been seen as a dirty pay by the government to buy the silence of the student leaders and have them rather praising the budget after tomorrow’s presentation.
Many unhappy Ghanaians have made it clear to government that they are in no mood to entertain any more taxes from an administration that has attempted tax even condoms.
If the government were to introduce more taxes, and the people snapped, an effective resistance would be led by the student front.
But by the smart idea to sweeten the leadership of the students’ front with free money, the Finance Ministry has effectively defanged them ahead of time.
