Bawumia Plays Nero While Ghana “Burns”

Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia was on Sunday, October 13, 2019, spotted in London watching an NFL match hosted by Tottenham Hotspur while controversial economic decisions rage on in Ghana.

Like the historical Roman Emperor Nero who played Music while Rome burned, critics have questioned Vice President Bawumia’s capacity to rescue the Ghanaian economy as he assured on the campaign trail and as the head of the Economic Management Team of the Akufo Addo administration.

While away, Ghana was recently downgraded by five positions on the Global Competitiveness ranking from 106 out of 140 countries in 2018 to 111 in 2019 from 141 sampled countries.

Also, contrary to his assurances while on the campaign trail, additional taxes introduced by the Akufo Addo administration, particularly the Communications Service Tax (CST) has drawn massive discontent towards the government.

On the macro-economic front, the rising interest rates on the bonds market signals a gradual slide down the slope of economic sustainability as public debt climbs rapidly.

Critics who saw the Vice President frolicking with the UK football team were concerned about how the Vice President could make the time to enjoy himself while on a serious official assignment.

Dr. Bawumia who is in the United Kingdom to attend the Financial Times (FT) 2019 Africa Summit, was at the new Tottenham Hotspur stadium to watch an NFL match between Oakland Raiders and Chicago Bears last Sunday. He was spotted in a photo tweeted by the UK High Commissioner to Ghana Iain Walker.
