On September 18, 2019, we published in the news of an alleged homicide in Abutia in Whatsup News and that there was a suspicion that a young man, who had died violently in the town in the Volta Region in August, was murdered.
In our report, we stated that sources claimed the violent murder “had been carried out at the behest of the Chief of Abutia, Togbe Abutia Kordzo”.
After several unreturned attempts through telephone calls and text messages to get a response from the chief, we went ahead to publish the report based on the information available to us.
However, Chief Togbe Abutia Kordzo on September 24, 2019, wrote to Whatsup News denying any link with the said homicide.
“The substance of the allegations which you imputed to our client relates to criminality and was disingenuously woven into deliberate malicious falsehoods to make our client-a revered paramount chief-seem like a notorious common criminal,” the lawyers of Togbe Abutia Kordzo wrote to Whatsup News.
We hereby render an unqualified apology to the chief of Abutia, Togbe Abutia Kordzo for what the publication may have caused him. We regret all harms done by the publication which was done after our attempt to seek response failed. We hereby withdraw that publication as the necessary authorities investigate the matter.
