NUGS “Shocked” And “Disgusted” By NIA Ghana Card Registration Amidst Covid 19

The national Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) has expressed disgust over the National Identification Authority (NIA)’s continuation of mass registration for the Ghana Card in the Eastern Region in spite of the deadly covid -19 pandemic.

In a statement signed by its General Secretary, Divine Edem Kwadzodeh, the Union said it was “disgusted” by the NIA’s recklessness.

“The National Union of Ghana Students is shocked and disgusted that the National Identification Authority is still going ahead with registration of people onto the national identification (Ghana) card in the Eastern Region, in flagrant disregard of directives issued by the President of the Republic , prohibiting mass public gatherings of more than 25 persons.

“To still be conducting this exercise at this time would force registration officers and the Ghanaian citizenry in the Eastern Region to face an unacceptable risk of contracting the novel corona virus,” the statement said.

It demanded that the NIA stop the registrations with immediate effect. “The National Identification Authority will be held responsible and liable for any case of COVID 19 emanating from this registration process if it does not heed to calls to halt the exercise,” the NUGS statement said.

It also called on President Akufo-Addo to immediately call the NIA to order.
