Mahama Wants Insurance Package For Frontline Health Workers Battling COVID 19

Former President John Mahama has called for a special insurance package for health workers in Ghana’s battle front against the novel corona virus pandemic.

In a Facebook broadcast, the former President who is also the 2020 Presidential Candidate of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) advised that such a package would boost morale among the health workers.

“An insurance package for health workers who may become severely infected in the line of duty, will be a good start,” he added.

The advice comes after the national Association of Nurses and Midwives advised its members at isolation centers to flee for their lives if adequate protection is not provided by Government.

So far, Ghana has recorded six cases of the deadly viral infection.

Mr. Mahama also advised that Governments isolation centers be devolved so that people who may catch the disease outside of Accra are not constrained to travel down to the national capital for isolation and care.

“The virus is not only an Accra or Tema problem. As we have noticed, one of the cases was found in Obuasi.

“Government must, therefore, immediately ensure the provision of Isolation Centres in all regions of the country. An identified case, kilometres from Accra, must not be transported to Accra for isolation and/ or treatment,” Mr. Mahama said.

According to him, the availability of the regional isolation centres, together with adequate testing kits, and more than enough Personal Protective Equipment will be an encouragement to the medical personnel “currently sacrificing a lot to support the ongoing efforts.”
