TRANSPORT FARES TO PLUMMET

…Easing Burden on Commuters Starting May 24

In a welcome development for commuters, transport fares are set to take a dip come May 24, as declared by the Ghana Private Roads and Transport Union (GPRTU).

This reduction comes on the heels of a stabilizing trend in petroleum prices and the gradual decline of the US dollar against the national currency, the Cedi, currently standing at 1:12.30p.

The Ghana Union of Traders and Association (GUTA) has also chimed in, advising its members to align their prices with the Cedi’s strength, further supporting the decline in transport fares.

Furthermore, there has been a notable wave of price reductions in various sectors, including the electrical appliances industry, with the introduction of initiatives like the ‘Cedi apicki’.

For instance, the cost of a large gallon of vegetable oil has plummeted from GHc1,200 to just above GHc800 at select stores, while cement prices have seen a significant slash from over GHc120 to GHc82 per bag by some cement manufacturers.

This positive shift follows a recent gathering where multiple transport bodies, including the GPRTU, convened with the Transport Ministry on Wednesday, May 20, 2025.

Samuel Amoah, the Public Relations Officer, expressed the unity amongst the transport organizations in agreeing to implement the fare reduction, emphasizing the need for pricing adjustments to keep pace with the currency trends.

The agreement reached in the meeting mandates a 15% reduction in transport fares effective Saturday, May 24, with hopes of further decreases in subsequent pricing cycles.

Additionally, the GPRTU has advised against aggression towards drivers and conductors who may not immediately comply with the new fares, urging the public to report any violations to the authorities rather than resorting to violence.

Alhaji Abass Moro stressed the importance of upholding the law and peaceful resolution of disputes, reassuring the public that measures will be taken within the Union to ensure adherence to the new pricing structure.
