Alhassan Yakubu Abanga, the national Vice Chairman of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), has taken a bold stance against his twin brother, Fuseini Yakubu Abanga, who is vying for the Aowin constituency seat on the ticket of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
Recently, Abanga, a national executive member of the opposition party, made a passionate campaign visit to the constituency in the Western North Region.
Clad in party t-shirt during a mini rally, he urged constituents to support both the NDC presidential candidate John Dramani Mahama and the NDC Parliamentary Candidate Oscar Ofori Larbi, over his own brother who is running for office on the opposing party’s ticket.
While some commend Abanga for his dedication to his party’s cause, others are surprised by his decision to prioritize the party’s interest over his familial ties.
Critics argue that although campaigning against his twin brother may be acceptable in politics, he could have chosen not to get involved in the same constituency where his brother is contesting.
This situation echoes similar instances in Ghanaian politics where family members have campaigned against each other, such as the Jinapor brothers and the Bawumia-Ramadan siblings.
In response to the criticism, Abanga reiterated his support by distributing JM-branded t-shirts and motorbikes to aid the NDC’s campaign efforts in the Western and Western North regions.
On the other side, Fuseini Abanga faced scrutiny from the NPP’s flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, for reportedly neglecting the Aowin constituency during the Electoral Commission’s limited voter registration exercise earlier this year.
The NPP raised concerns about the potential impact on their chances of winning the seat currently held by the NDC’s Oscar Ofori Larbi.
