The vigilance of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has resulted in the identification of broken seals on an electoral material bag in the Eastern Region.
Throughout the regions, where the election exercise is ongoing, electoral materials have been successfully transported from the Greater Accra Region. However, this marks the first instance where a seal has been found broken.
There are suspicions that the bag may have been tampered with for ulterior motives. The materials were intended for distribution to certain constituencies in the region, known as the second stronghold of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
In a widely circulated video, opposition party agents and supporters were seen expressing their concerns, stating that they will not overlook the issue until it is addressed by the police and the Electoral Commission (EC).
The commotion reportedly ensued at the Regional Police Command. In the video reviewed by our platform, an aggrieved individual recording the scene questioned why all bag seals were intact except for three bags, allegedly belonging to the Nkwakaw constituency, which were found with broken seals.
They made it clear that they would not allow the bag to proceed to its destination until the matter was resolved.
The agents emphasized that they would not leave anything to chance so close to the December 7 general election.
This development comes at a time when prominent government figures from the region, such as the Food and Agriculture Minister, Bryan Acheampong, have declared their intent to oversee the region on Election Day.
In response to the incident, the police have promptly addressed the matter, explaining that the breach occurred during the transportation of the materials to the regional capital for distribution to the constituencies.
A police statement clarified that the seals were inadvertently broken while the bags were being packed and unpacked.
The police assured that the situation has been brought under control and that all relevant parties, including representatives from political parties, have reached an agreement.
They reassured the public that the bag’s contents have been verified to be intact. “The Ghana Police Service wishes to inform the public that an incident involving the broken seal of an electoral material bag in Koforidua, intended for distribution to a constituency in the Eastern Region, has been successfully resolved.
Upon inspection, it was determined that the seal was off due to the packing and unpacking process,” the statement said.
Following various printing errors, ballot paper burning, and other anomalies overseen by Chairperson Jean Mensa, a section of the public has cast doubt on the police’s explanation.
Allegations of collusion between the police, EC, and the government to facilitate potential rigging have been leveled. Many skeptics have urged the NDC to maintain heightened vigilance throughout the entire electoral process, from before voting to after.
