…Wife engages in Open Propaganda
…Blames Mahama For Medication Gridlock Crisis Blame
Tracy A. Owusu-Addo, the wife of renowned musician Michael Owusu-Addo, popularly known as Sarkodie, has thrust the couple into the political limelight by shedding light on her husband’s alleged affiliation with the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and attributing the government’s failure to clear over $45 million worth of medication to former President John Mahama’s policies.
Her defence is seen as consistent with disguised critique by the Musician, Sarkodie of the former President, John Mahama during his struggling attempt to stop persistent load shedding known as ‘Dumsor’ prior to the 2016 electioneering campaign.
Members of the opposition NDC party have condemned the musician as using his music career to campaign for the New Patriotic Party, (NPP) which eventually won that election.
In a not too surprising twist, Tracy Owusu-Addo, who is not known for political commentary, has subtly criticized the government’s handling of the locked-up medication issue, asserting that the administration’s limited stake in the Tema Port has hindered its ability to resolve the crisis effectively.
She pointed fingers at the previous government by alleging that control over the Port was transferred to a French company during Mahama’s tenure, thereby diminishing government influence in port operations.
However, critics have raised questions about Tracy’s sudden foray into political matters, suggesting possible ulterior motives or a connection to a governmental setup related to the Tema Port.
Despite her lack of a professional background in political matters, Tracy has positioned herself as a vocal critic of the government’s handling of the medication impasse, drawing mixed reactions from various quarters.
Legal practitioner Beatrice Annan, affiliated with the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has contradicted Tracy’s claims, describing the Tema Port operations as a Build, Operate, and Transfer (BOT) project rather than a complete handover to a concessionaire.
Annan rebuked Tracy for allegedly engaging in “cheap propaganda” and misrepresenting the nature of the port agreement. The ongoing saga involving Tracy Owusu-Addo’s political commentary comes amidst Sarkodie’s notable history of expressing political views through his music career.
Despite initial expectations for him to use his platform to critique the current government, Sarkodie has remained relatively neutral, even releasing a campaign song endorsing President Akufo-Addo during the 2020 elections.
The expansion project at the Tema Port, signed with the Meridian Ports Services (MPS) in 2015, represents a significant infrastructure enhancement aimed at modernizing the port facilities and improving cargo handling capacity.
With an estimated completion date in 2025, the multi-billion-dollar initiative is set to enhance trade activities and create job opportunities in Ghana.
Tracy Owusu-Addo’s unexpected political engagement has stirred discussions about the intersection of celebrity influence and governance issues in Ghana, prompting a closer examination of the complexities surrounding public figures entering the political domain.
