Bawumia Accused of Bribing Imams with GHc2.4 Million

A scandal has emerged involving the alleged bribery of Imams and Mallams by New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, as his team reportedly handed out envelopes of cash amounting to GHc8,000 each during a tour of the Greater Accra Region.

The distribution of money, said to have taken place at the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) as part of the vice president’s regional tour, involved over 300 Imams and Mallams who were each given GHc8,000 supposedly to support Dr. Bawumia’s campaign.

One of the recipients, Imam Husein from East Legon, has denounced the cash presentation as a corrupt act, accusing Dr. Bawumia of using deceitful tactics to gain favor. He criticized the NPP flagbearer for appearing insincere in his actions and questioned the motives behind the cash distribution.

During a live interview on Power FM’s Gumbe show, Imam Husein vowed to expose Dr. Bawumia’s actions, citing verses from the Quran to highlight his disapproval of the alleged bribery scheme.

He also praised former President John Mahama for his support to the Muslim community, emphasizing the significance of his contributions, such as upgrading the Tamale airport to an international standard for Hajj pilgrims.

Imam Husein condemned the perceived manipulation of religious leaders and called for transparency and honesty in political engagements. He expressed disappointment in his fellow Imams who accepted the cash envelopes, urging them to speak out against such practices.

The unfolding controversy raises concerns about ethical conduct in political campaigns and underscores the importance of upholding integrity in interactions with religious communities.
