…Triggers Outcry and Potential Protests
Royal members of Kowe acting on behalf of La Stool have entered into the ongoing dispute surrounding the sale of six properties owned by the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) in Ghana.
Their objection stems from the lack of consultation in the process to transfer ownership of these assets to Rock City, particularly the La Palm Royal Beach Resort and La Beach Rock City, situated on land traditionally controlled by the La Stool community.
In a statement dated May 23, 2024, signed by Michael Sowah and addressed to the Director General of SSNIT, Kofi Bosompem Osafo-Maafo, the Royal Family raised concerns over the potential sale of properties without appropriate consultation with the rightful landowners.
The statement highlighted the need for involvement or consultation with the original owners when properties originally acquired for national interest change hands to private entities.
The revelations by Member of Parliament Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa regarding the sale of the hotels have sparked widespread discontent, with labor unions such as the Trades Union Congress (TUC) and Civil and Local Government Staff Association, Ghana (CLOGSAG), demanding an immediate halt to the process.
A planned demonstration on June 18, 2024, led by Mr. Ablakwa, seeks to bring attention to the issue and increase pressure on the government to intervene.
Amidst growing outcry and potential protests, stakeholders, including the Minister for Employment and Labour, engaged in discussions following President Akufo-Addo’s intervention, underscoring the escalating tensions and concerns surrounding the sale of SSNIT properties.
