Bawumiah’s Broken Economy: Scholars Oversea Facing Crisis

The repercussions of Ghana’s current state of economic disarray have extended far beyond its borders, placing students on government scholarships studying abroad in precarious situations.

Ghanaian students on government scholarships pursuing their education in various universities in Morocco have issued a grave warning to President Akufo-Addo regarding the prolonged non-payment of their stipends, leaving them in dire circumstances for over 10 months.

Recently, students studying in Europe and America have reached out for help, appealing for assistance for their fellow scholarship recipients across the globe who are facing imminent hardship and neglect.

In a poignant display of distress, students in Morocco gathered in front of Ghana’s embassy to share their dire experiences, detailing the harsh living conditions and financial hardships they are enduring.

The challenging circumstances have pushed many students to skip classes and sleep on the streets due to their inability to cover rent costs in a foreign country where safety concerns, especially for non-citizens, loom large.

With emotions running high, the students shed light on the harsh realities they are grappling with, underscoring the difficulties faced by female students who can’t even afford basic necessities like sanitary pads.

Diminished financial support from families back in Ghana, coupled with the soaring cost of living in Morocco, has left the students in dire need of assistance.

One courageous male student highlighted the exorbitant rental prices in an unsafe environment, where even the most affordable accommodation runs at $120 per month.

Hailing from disadvantaged backgrounds, the students stressed that they were sent to Morocco on government-funded scholarships, emphasizing their urgent requirement for the long-overdue financial aid.

Expressing desperation and imploring for the President’s intervention, the students laid out the grim reality of their plight, cautioning that any further delay in receiving their stipends could have catastrophic consequences, potentially leading to fatalities among the student population.

The students’ heartfelt plea concluded with a chilling warning that without a resolution and the delayed payments addressed, President Akufo-Addo would bear the responsibility for any tragic outcomes that might unfold.

The impassioned appeal from these stranded students serves as a stark reminder of the pressing need for swift resolution to address their predicament, ensuring their safety and well-being in a foreign land where they find themselves in dire straits.
