Family members of the founder and leader of the United Progressive Party, Akwasi Addai Odike, last week found themselves at the receiving end of hectoring, after they were summoned before the chief of the Kesehene of Adumakaase in the Ashanti Region.
Apparently, Odike’s family head was summoned over his unknown whereabouts before the chief, following the man’s decision to go into hiding after his criticism of traditional leaders in Ashanti over illegal mining caused displeasure.
A video of the appearance of the family, captures an entourage led by a man believed to be the family head, being peppered with questions over the whereabouts of Odike.
In that hostile environment. The family members were told that they were not permitted to even whimper when the chief was speaking, with the Ohene himself, expressing longing for the good old days when the family members would have been made to prostate before him or harmed for merely being the family members of Odike.
The politician had recently chastised Asante chiefs over illegal mining in the region, blaming them for not stepping their feet down on the menance and warning that if it does not stop he would personally lead the youth to demonstrate against the chiefs.
Supposedly scandalized by Odike’s utterances, the traditional council there arrogated to itself, extra constitutional powers, and ostracized Odike from Kumasi with traditional rites and incantations..
Then after banning him, the same chiefs summoned the politician. The traditional Council would go on to direct Oyerepa FM, the radio station on which Odike made his vow, to stop operation and close down.
Many have since expressed anger over the behavior of the traditional council which is seen as overreaching in a Republic which is not a monarchy.
Oyerepa has since been allowed to come back on air but Odike has since been in hiding, fearing for his life.
It is as the man has been forced to live like a fugitive that his family members were summoned before the Kesehene of Adumkaase to tell the whereabouts of Odike.
The family’s failure to tell the man’s whereabouts was met with hectors and veiled threats, before the chief eventually lost his cool and summarily dismissed them after expressing his wish that things were like in the good old days when chiefs could decide who lived and who died.
Meanwhile, through the obvious attack on the Republic’s constitution by the overreaching monarchs of Ashanti, a hypocrite President Akufo-Addo who has been hailed as a supposed human rights lawyer has remained mum.
This is because, in Ghana, when Asanteman speaks, everybody shuts up, including even the democratically elected president.
