University of Ghana Political Science lecturer, Prof Ransford Gyampo, has expressed defeat in respect of any expectation that the Akufo-Addo government can shepherd Ghana out of the current economic doldrums after it emerged that the government had voted to splurge US$140million out of a US$750million facility to host the All Africa Games this year.
Prof Gyampo wonders why the games are a priority when basic needs andat a time the country’s finances are in a mess.
“The handling of our money even in times of crisis is so hopeless. We got a loan of USD750m but received only USD713m. Then we want to use USD140m for games? We need the priceless games but can’t we solve basic needs and demands first?” he quizzed.
On August 29, 2022, Government was to receive a $750 million loan facility from the Afrexim Bank but only $713 was paid into Government coffers with the explanation from a Deputy Finance Minister that the $37 million is in an escrow account to use as debt servicing.
It has also been revealed that $140 million will be used by the country to host the All Africa Games.
