National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr. Samuel Ofosu-Ampofo, has said his party has no interest whatsoever, in shooting and bombing its way to power.
In the wake of the Akufo-Addo government’s nervous jitters that somebody might make a move to overthrow its administration, the NDC Chairman said the opposition party has all interest in protecting its own baby – the Fourth Republic and the constitution that bedrocks it.
“The 1992 constitution was conceived and birthed by us. Today, those who are running to the Supreme Court to defend the Constitution, ran away from the Constituent Assembly which actually promulgated the 1992 Constitution. We birthed that constitution, for that matter, we will be the last to do anything to undermine that constitutional order,” he said.
The NDC Chairman said this while addressing supporters of the party in the US over the weekend.
In recent times, the Akufo-Addo government has been fanning coup rhetoric with arrests of supposed coup plotters, including a group supposedly plotting to overthrow the government with kitchen knives and pepper bombs.
However, even though many laughed off the government’s own paranoia, respected legal luminary, Prof. Raymond Atuguba, jolted the nation when he warned that current economic challenges could provoke an attempt to overthrow the government.
“We do not want a coup in this country. Yet, I fear that if we do not act quickly, we may have one on our hands very soon,” Prof. Atuguba had said.
But according to Mr. Ofosu Ampofo, the NDC is not interested in a coup but intends to use every democratic means to pursue justice.
“So we are not interested in coup d’etat, we are interested in using the democratic process of using the thumb of the people to remove Nana Akufo-Addo and incompetent Bawumia from office and form the new government,” he added.
