UK collegiate research university, Cambridge University, is asking the authorities in Ghana to give the Convener of the #FixTheCountry pressure group, Oliver Barker-Vormawor, a fair trial in the Akufo-Addo government’s supposed coup allegations against him.
In a statement, the University where Mr. Barker Vormawor is a Ph.D. student expressed concerns about the blatant breach of due process that has already punctuated the arrest and detention of the activist.
“Students and staff at the University of Cambridge remain deeply concerned about the wellbeing of Oliver Barker-Vormawor, a Ph.D. student at the University of Cambridge, who was arrested on 11 February at Kotoka International Airport, in Ghana, and subsequently charged with treason felony,” the highly renowned top university wrote.
It was reechoing concerns by Oliver’s legal team in Ghana who had warned that there have been breaches of due process in his treatment. This has been confirmed by other independent sources.”
Mr. Barker-Vormawor was arrested by the Akufo-Addo government after he posted on social media that he would stage a coup if the controversial e-levy was passed.
Even though he clearly explained that the use of the word coup was a play on words, the fidgety Akufo-Addo government arrested him and put him in detention for days, breaching habeas corpus.
He was eventually granted a Ghc2million bail by a court but even so, he was still held in detention until later.
Mr. Barker-Vormawor in his application for bail had contested claims of threatening a coup, saying a charge of treason felony against him cannot be sustained by the evidence available.
He has dared the State to go to trial with his case.
Eventually, after much pressure, Barker-Vormawor was reluctantly released from police custody after meeting his bail conditions Thursday evening.
The freedom fighter was met by crowds of youth fans who gave him a hero’s welcome from the clutches of the Akufo-Addo regime when he stepped out of custody.
