70.38% of respondents to stop using MoMo if the E-Levy bill is passed …Ghanaweb poll

A poll conducted by popular news portal, Ghanaweb, to gauge the response that Ghanaians will likely give if the Electronic Transfer Levy (E-Levy) is passed, had the overwhelming majority of respondents saying they will stop using mobile money services.

70.38% of respondents said they would stop using MoMo services if the levy is passed.

This is out of a total of 3,720 respondents in the free open online poll.

The poll limited respondents to the question as to whether they would continue to use MoMo or not in the event the e-levy is passed. It was rather constrictive because it did not explore the question within the larger scope of the effect that the e-levy would have not only on MoMo transactions but also on banking.

The E-Levy is aimed to provide an allowance for government to tax money transfer of all forms, including bank transfers, not only MoMo, something that experts have said is thievish because the government will essentially be taxing savings and capital.

Even so, the total number of people in the Ghanaweb poll who said they would stop using MoMo if the Bill is passed was 2,600 out of the total of 3,720 which constituted 70.38%.

Some 973 respondents, (26.16%) said they will continue to use MoMo if the Bill passes while 129 respondents (3.47%) said they do not know if they will continue to use MoMo services upon the passage of the Bill.
