Accra-based XYZ Broadcasting, has said the jailing of a presenter of Power FM, a station on its stables, Oheneba Boamah Bennie, will not dampen its resolve to continue to speak truth to power.
In a statement signed by CEO, Bernie Anti, the station also vowed to stand by the presenter, who has become a target of the Akufo-Addo government and the pro-NPP judiciary for his outspoken show.
“We wish to assure staff and the general public that this ruling will not dampen in our collective resolve and commitment to speak truth to power. Ohene Boamah Bennie , who is currently unwell, is in good spirit and we pledge to stand by him and his family during these trying times and pray that he gets the best of protection while in the custody of the state,” the statement said.
Oheneba Boamah Bennie was on Tuesday sentenced to 14 days in jail for contempt of court.
The convict is said to have revealed that President Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo had influenced some justices of the Supreme Court after the declaration of the 2020 presidential election results.
The court presided over by Justice Elfrida Denkyi, also slapped him with a GH¢3,000 fine claiming she had been lenient even with the conviction and fine.
The broadcaster had been dragged to court by the Attorney-General (A-G) for contempt.
The A-G, who tends to get a judgment in his favor in political cases, urged the Accra High Court to commit Bennie to prison for contempt of court for alleging that President Akufo-Addo had met with eight justices of the Supreme Court, including the Chief Justice, and that the said meeting was to influence the judges in the event of any election petition.
The A-G averred that the comments by Bennie were false and were meant to bring the Judiciary into disrepute.
