The John Evans Atta Mills (JEAM) Memorial Heritage which was launched on Tuesday to immortalize and promote the ideals of late former President John Atta Mills will be holding a series of lectures to commemorate the 10th anniversary of his death.
Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Heritage, Dr. Alex Segbefia, announced at the launch of the Heritage that as part of the series, a major lecture will be held in July in memory of Professor Mills.
“…we have developed a program of activities for the heritage to cover a yearlong celebration of the 10th anniversary of his death. There will be a series of JEAM memorial lectures, which will cover all the regions possibly clustered into zones,” he said.
He added that activities will also include infrastructural projects, sporting activities, academic scholarships especially in the areas of law and taxation.
President Mills acknowledged for what is described as his peaceful nature, died suddenly in office on 24th July 2012. He is the first and only Ghanaian president who has died in office.
According to Alex Segbefia, during the 9th anniversary of his passing last year, a group of academics, professionals, colleagues, former appointees, students and family decided that an organization be created to preserve his heritage and legacy.
The group started to expand on the concept of Professor Mills’ heritage. From this group, a planning committee was established to actualize the concept. As a result, the John Evans Atta Mills memorial was incorporated on the 14th of October, 2021 at the Registrar General’s Department as not for profit, non-partisan, independent, charitable company limited by guarantee.
“It currently has a Board of four directors namely Dr. Sherry Aryeetey, Hon Samuel Atta Mills, Mr. C.C Quaynu and Alex Segbefia as Chairman. Nana Oye Bampoe Addo is the Secretary to the Committee.”
As part of the launch, former President John Mahama who had served as Vice President to President Mills had unveiled the Heritage’s logo made up of three symbols and three colors signifying President Mills’ deep involvement in academia, specifically in the area of Law and Taxation.
