Former President John Dramani Mahama, Tuesday, launched a memorial heritage for late former President John Evans Atta Mills in Accra.
The John Evans Atta Mills (JEAM) Memorial Heritage is a non-profit, non-partisan organization purposed to immortalize the ideals of the late president, including peacefulness, transparency, accountability and national love.
“Professor John Evans Atta Mills was a good man. It, therefore, gladdens the hearts of many millions of people who loved him, that this decision was taken to launch the Atta Mills Heritage here on the campus of the University of Ghana,” former President Mahama said in a speech.
The late President John Evans Atta Mills who served as vice president of Ghana from 1997 to 2001 and later became Ghana’s President from January 7, 2008, to July 24, 2012, died in office on July 24, 2012.
Chairman of JEAM Memorial Heritage, Alex Segbefia, said the unique view of the late John Evans Atta Mills to society would deepen through the establishment of the JEAM memorial Heritage.
He said his values would be inculcated in people and welcomed the support of individuals and institutions.
The launch had been chaired by Nana Kobina Nketsia V, the Paramount Chief of Essikado Traditional Area in the Western Region.
Senior Economist and founding member of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), Mr. Kwame Pianim, delivered the keynote address at the launch which was themed, “The Man John Evans Atta Mills – 10 years on.”
Mr. Kwame Pianim cited many memories he has of the late former president, including the fact that even though he (Pianim) is an NPP man, Professor Mills, had worked together with his boss to grant him full unconditional pardon after he had been jailed for allegedly planning a coup against an earlier Rawlings junta.
He recalled how Professor Mills, while head of the country’s tax institution had personally ensured that political victimization that some workers at the GRA were subjecting Mr. Pianim’s company to was stopped.
