Vice President Dr. Mamahamudu Bawumia on Friday claims the government will rebuild all the houses that were leveled in the devastating Apeatse explosion in Bogoso-Western Region on Thursday.
Bawumia made this curious promise while presenting relief items to surviving victims of the explosion. Among the relief items was a cash donation of Ghc200,000.
“For the houses that have been destroyed, we are already thinking about how to rehabilitate and rebuild them for the community here. I have already spoken to the State Housing Corporation. And with consultation with the mining companies around here, we will quickly try to put in place facilities that will help those who have been displaced,” Vice President Bawumia said.
However, his dented credibility in fulfilling promises he and his New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration had made is likely to make the displaced victims less optimistic.
Already, the Vice President has been made a favorite punching bag for Ghanaians over his tall list of failed promises, including his monumental failure, as the head of the Economic Management Team (EMT), to “arrest” the rapid depreciation of the Ghanaian cedis as he vehemently vowed to do when he was campaigning for the high office.
Bawumia had also promised that within the first couple of years of the NPP administration, Ghana would be an economic paradise, because the country will avoid foreign aid, and generate massive revenues internally.
Unfortunately, the administration of Akufo Addo has abandoned its favorite “Ghana Beyond Aid” as soon as it took over the administration of the country. Within the first and second years in office, Vice President Bawumia was already cap-in-hand in China, seeking Chinese aid for infrastructure.
Among other failed promises of Vice President Bawumia is the fact that within its first term in office, virtually every Ghanaian would be wielding a national identification card. That was a monumental failure, as that promise was never fulfilled in the first four-year term of his administration.
Meanwhile, while making the promise to build the houses for the victims, the Vice President had led a high-powered delegation including, Information Minister, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, Inspector-General of Police, George Akuffo Dampare among others to the community on Friday, a day after the blast.
The blast had occurred when a truck carrying mining explosives had collided with a motorcycle and caught fire.
The impact of the blast flattened a whole community and destroyed more than 100 houses.
