UK To Offload Migrants To Countries Including Ghana

The United Kingdom government has plans in motion to send hundreds of asylum seekers to countries including Ghana and Rwanda for processing and resettlement.

This is according to a report by the BBC which quoted the UK Times newspaper as the source.

According to the story, the newspaper quoted unnamed government sources who said the plans are among populist policies being pushed to save Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s embattled premiership.

“Ministers are willing to pay hundreds of millions of pounds a year to any nation willing to take up its offer, although none has done so,” the Times reports.

But in a statement released on January 18, 2022, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration denied that Ghana had accepted to host any asylum seeker from the UK.

“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration wishes to state categorically that Ghana has not engaged with the UK on any such plan and does not intend to consider any such operation in the future,” the Ministry stated.

Meanwhile, the UN has warned against the nationality and borders bill that’s being debated by UK lawmakers because it says it increases the risk of “serious human rights violations” and does not respect the country’s obligations under international law.
