Transport Fares Go Up From October 25

Transport fares will be increased from Monday, October 25, 2021, says the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU).

GPRTU cites increases in fuel prices as the reason for the increment.

Fuel prices, recently went up 2.59% causing concern among already stretched out Ghanaian people.

The Industrial Relations Officer for the Accra branch of the GPRTU, Alhaji Abass Imoro told the media that although the association has met with the government, they are constrained to increase fares because of continuous increment in fuel prices.

He said that even though the GPRTU had earlier promised not to increase fares until later in December, it has been constrained to abandon the wait because of the increases in fuel prices.

According to Alhaji Abass Imoro government has failed to keep its contractual assurances of stabilizing the prices of fuel so that transport fares can remain steady at least in the short term after fares were last increased in June 2021.

“The rate at which our fuel prices are increased, I don’t want to preempt anything because there could be another increment soon. Government came up with a sharing policy and we have done our part but they have not. So, hopefully, by next week, we shall increase transport fares. As we speak now, those who are not in any union have increased their fares. The floating trotro drivers have increased their fares,” he said.

He explained further that the removal of the Price Stabilization and Recovery Levies (PRSL) on petrol, diesel, and LPG for two months as approved by the National Petroleum Authority (NPA), in its marginal nature does not warrant a corresponding reduction in the cost of transportation.
