Tamale Youth Rain Stones On Police And NEDCo

Angry youth in the Northern regional capital, Tamale, on Saturday went on a rampage in response to the beating of some alleged thieves by police officers last week.

In the reprisal attack, the youth vandalized some offices of the Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCo) and a Police station at Lamashegu.

The mode of attack was the pelting of stones at the offices, vandalizing buildings, and the windscreens of cars alike.

In the Lamashegu attack, the Divisional Commander, Chief Superintendent Afari Yeboah, was reportedly injured.

The youth reportedly embarked on a demonstration which was to be crowned with the presentation of a petition to some chiefs over the brutalization of some youth of the town by the Police.

The earlier Police brutalities had happened after the Police had arrested some youth who were alleged to have been illegally tapping electricity power from the lines of NEDCo.

Videos of the Police brutalities captured officers who were said to have been sent to NEDCo to assist NEDCo to undertake inspection of activities on their network lines and had encountered the alleged power thieves whom they manhandled.

The Police Public Affairs Department has since apologized for the brutalities but apparently, the apology was not enough to assuage the anger of the city’s youth.

After vandalizing the Lamashegu Police station, the angry youth had started for the Regional Police Headquarters. They were however intercepted by armed personnel of the Service who barricaded the road leading to the Head office.

A team has also been deployed on the streets patrolling the town.
