Gov’t Officially Commissions New Onion Market At Adjen Kotoku

A new market in Adjen Kotoku in the Ga West Municipality of the Greater Accra Region which the government built to relocate the onion market at Agbogbloshie in Central Accra has been officially commissioned.

A durbar of the chiefs and people of the area was held on Monday the 28th of June, 2021, to officially open the market. 

The Commissioning officially opens the way for an exodus of onion sellers from Agbogbloshie to Adjen Kotoku.

Hon. Henry Quartey, the Greater Accra Regional Minister, who headlined the commissioning durbar, announced the government has made available, Ghc500,000 for the sellers to transport their wares and shops to the new market which has all the accessories of a modern market.

The onion sellers at Agbogbloshie have therefore been urged to relocate by 1st of July, 2021.

Moves to relocate the onion market from Agbogbloshie to Adjen Kotoku had first been initiated by the erstwhile Kufuor government.

However, it had never really been carried out until the current Greater Accra Regional Minister started a campaign to decongest the national capital, Accra.

It has therefore taken 15 years to eventually materialize, through Hon. Henry Quartey’s campaign, “Make Accra Great Again” to achieve it.

The Minister urged the onion sellers relocating from Agbogbloshie to eagerly move promising that government has a whole package of help for them, including making available loans through the NBSSI, for the recapitalization of the onion sellers.

He also promised there were plans to add more accessories and sheds to the new onion market at Adjen Kotoku, saying big financial institutions in the country are already lining up to open offices at the place.

Hon. Quartey urged the onion sellers to relocate peacefully and live at peace with the peace-loving people of Adjen Kotoku.

Also in attendance at the durbar were the traditional rulers of the area, the MCE for Ga West Municipal Assembly, Nii Lantey Wilkinson and the National Chief Imam, His Eminence, Sheikh Nuhu Osmanu Sharubutu.

Sheikh Nuhu Sharubutu especially implored the onion sellers, most of whom are Muslims, to live at peace with their new hosts.

Meanwhile, the Greater Accra Regional Minister announced that a Committee that has been put together to disburse the Ghc500,000 to the onion sellers for relocation will have the chief Imam as an eminent personage.

It also includes the MPs for Binduri, Garu Tempane and Ablekuma Central.

WhatsUp News has since learnt that the Agbogbloshie land from which the onion sellers are being relocated belongs to the National Youth Authority (NYA) and that the Authority has plans in place to put it under use.
