Double Whammy: After Dumsor, Water Rationing Begins

As Ghanaians reel under the electricity crisis in the country, they are expected to be hit with another blow as Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) also starts rationing water, starting with the Tema Metropolitan area.

Whatsup News has seen an April 12, 2021 announcement from the GWCL warning that the city and its environs would be cut off water for the now-amorphous excuse of “routine maintenance”

The notice signed by Mac-Doe Hanyabui, the Acting Regional Chief Manager of GWCL reads: “Management of Ghana Water Company Limited-Tema Region, wishes to respectfully inform its cherished customers that there will be an interruption in water supply…for routine maintenance works on the 42nd Transmission Pipeline from Kpone Treatment Plant.”

He went ahead to list virtually the entire Tema metropolitan area as well as the Ashaiman township as places that will be affected by the week-long interruption in water supply in the metropolis.

“Customers in the affected area are therefore being advised to store enough water before the interruption. Supply will be restored as soon as maintenance work is completed,” the GWCL warned.

Whatsup News has gathered that this is a precursor to a snowballing effect that is set to hit the entire country soon.

Incidentally, when the electricity rationing started, the same tactics was adopted, with the Ghana Grid Distribution Company (GRIDCo) saying the power interruptions were mere routine maintenance, yet, the so-called maintenance had started since February 2021, with the Akufo Addo administration denying flatly that Ghana has reverted back to the days of serious electricity crisis.

While GRIDCo, government spokespersons and others close to the Akufo Addo administration are denying the power crisis, the Energy Minister, Mathew Opoku-Prempeh has hinted that the power crisis (Dumsor) may last till the end of 2021.
