Flip-Flopping Gov’t informs Diplomats Of Postponement Of Rawlings’ Funeral

The Akufo-Addo government has written to the diplomatic community in Ghana announcing that the planned funeral of late former President Rawlings has been postponed.

A 16th December circular from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the plan to hold the funeral on 23rd December has been discarded due to “unforeseen circumstances.”

“…with reference to the former’s Note Verbale No.PR/CIR dated 8th December, 2020, informing of the funeral arrangements for the late Flt. Lt. Jerry John Rawlings, Former President of the Republic of Ghana, has the honor to inform you with regret, that due to unforeseen circumstances, the funeral will not be held from 20th December, 2020 as planned.

The Ministry has since also released a press statement announcing the postponement to the general public.

Confusion rocked the funeral arrangements for the late former President Rawlings when the government and a funeral planning committee announced December 23rd as the date for the funeral without recourse to the family of the late Statesman.

The  blunder by the Akufo-Addo Jubilee House led to protestation from the family and the traditional authority of Anlo, where Rawlings had been installed a chief before his passing.

The office of the Awadada of Anlo has since petitioned the Jubilee House for the inclusion of the Anlo traditional council in the preparations, leading to a postponement of the funeral.
