Former President John Mahama has expressed sympathies to flood victims in the recent devastating floods that ravaged residents in the Upper East Region after a visit to some of the affected communities on Thursday.
The former President, accompanied by national Chairman, Samuel Ofosu Ampofo, former Chief of Staff, Julius Debrah, General Secretary, Johnson Asiedu Nketia, National Organizer, Joshua Akamba, some MPs from the area and other party executives expressed condolences to the bereaved as he interacted with the people. Official figures place the number of casualties at 28 and over 30,000 displaced and while more than 2,000 homes were destroyed.
Whatsup News has learnt that the NDC 2020 flagbearer presented relief items including about 300 bags of rice to compliment relief support from the government. The team visited Chiana-Paga, Navrongo, Builsa South and Builsa North areas of the region. The delegation also paid courtesy calls on the chiefs and elders in the various communities.
John Mahama’s visit comes in the wake of complaints by those displaced about “half-hearted” support given them by the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) which started distributing some relief items only this week. Last week Vice President Mahamadu Bawumia led a government delegation including Interior Minister, Ambrose Dery and NADMO officials to visit the area. He presented GHC50, 000 to the affected residents. In what has been described at a late response, NADMO has started distributing relief items including roofing sheets, rice, sugar, detergents, water purification gadgets among others
