The Ghanaian Electoral Commission (EC) has set June 30, 2020, to commence the compilation of its controversial new voters’ register.
This date is despite the fact that the EC is currently facing a lawsuit against the new register in the Supreme Court.
Whatsup News has intercepted a letter issued by the EC to the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) about the schedule. It reads: “I bring you warm greetings from the Electoral Commission and trust that this letter finds you well. This letter comes to inform you that the 2020 Voters’ Registration Exercise has been scheduled to commence on Tuesday, the 30th of June, 2020.”
Interestingly, the letter issued to the NPP was dated June 8, 2020, even though, the Ghanaian Parliament only voted today, June 9, 2020, to pass the Constitutional Instrument (C. I 126) to allow the EC to commence the controversial registration process.
The letter signed by Bossman Asare, the EC Deputy Chairman responsible for Corporate Services and addressed to the NPP General Secretary, John Boadu, continues: “The registration will be held at all Registration Centres and District Offices of the Electoral Commission throughout the country.”
It is unclear if other political parties have been issued with copies of the same letter as required by election regulations.
Meanwhile, the decision has already whipped up suspicions, because during the last meeting of the Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC), the parties appeared to have resolved that any date for the registration exercise must be mutually agreed upon.
Sources have told Whatsup News that this new date set by the EC was a unilateral decision without recourse to all the parties in the IPAC.
