EC Looking For PPE After Minority Exposition

The Electoral Commission (EC) has started advertising for bids for the supply of pandemic Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) so it can commence its controversial decision to compile a new voters’ register.

The advertisement has been running since last week in the main state newspaper, the Daily Graphic and the deadline for the bids is slated for May 15, 2020.

The adverts started running shortly after the Minority parliamentarians from the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) accused the EC of secretly receiving PPE from the Akufo Addo administration.

According to Minority Leader, Haruna Iddrisu in a press conference last week, the government of chose to supply PPE to officials of the EC when doctors, nurses and other frontline healthcare workers were crying for PPE.

However, the EC has issued a statement to debunk the claim.

“The Commission has not stated anywhere that it has received personal protective equipment (PPE) from the government as stated by the Minority Leader during the press conference. For the avoidance of doubt, the Commission has not received any PPE from the government. The Commission finds it troubling that the leader of the Minority party in Parliament will put out information of this nature without substantiating its authenticity,” the EC said in the statement issued on May 11, 2020.

The EC is under intense fire following its uncompromising plan to compile a new  register, a scheme which has been viewed as an election-rigging ploy.
