…Bawumia and Ken Agyapong Turn Adum Market Fire Tragedy into NPP Campaign Stage
The fiery aftermath of the recent Adum market blaze has seemingly evolved into a battleground for the two competitive figures eyeing the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) presidential ticket for the upcoming 2028 election.
Former NPP flagbearer Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia wasted no time and made a bold appearance at the scene, while Ken Agyapong, the runner-up in the NPP primaries, dispatched a team to the area to express condolences and offer aid to the affected traders.
Both political heavyweights are strategically staking their claim in the Ashanti Region, the party’s traditional stronghold, evidently laying the groundwork for the future power struggle.
The devastating fire, which swept through the Central Business District in the early hours of Friday, March 21, left a trail of destruction, with President John Dramani Mahama himself rushing to the site following a tree-planting event in Nkwawie.
Dr. Bawumia, alongside key party figures in the region, visited the market on Tuesday, extending support to the traders by donating GH₵200,000 and 1,000 bags of cement. He also called for swift action from the government to complete the long-overdue Kejetia Market Phase 2, emphasizing the need to restore normalcy for the affected merchants.
Meanwhile, Ken Agyapong, currently embroiled in legal battles and residing in the US, expressed sympathy for the traders and pledged his assistance through a dedicated team on the ground. Upon his return, he plans to engage personally with the victims to address their needs and chart a way forward.
The Kejetia Market, touted as West Africa’s largest ultra-modern market, stands as a symbol of development initiated during President Mahama’s tenure, with construction efforts set in motion back in 2015.
